Year 9 Correspondence
Thank you for attending last night's options evening for year 9 students. I hope you found the evening both informative and useful. Subject teachers certainly enjoyed talking with you all about the opportunities we have at Wyedean and were delighted to receive so many thoughtful questions.
One point that I would like to clarify having discussed this with Mrs Jones, Head of Year 9, is that tutors will not accept application forms before Tuesday 26th February. It was clear last night that lots of students were keen to hand in the application form immediately as they are already confident of their choices. Initially we thought that this would be fine. However, having reflected upon this, we feel that some students will want to use half-term to seek opinions and discuss their options further. We wouldn’t want anyone to feel rushed to make a decision if they thought that they may not get a place on their chosen course if they did not submit the form immediately. Please also be assured, that whilst it does happen, there will be very few cases where we will need to consider a first come, first served approach to assigning an option.
Please can I also take this opportunity to direct you to the options page of the school website where you will find the PowerPoint that I presented last night, an electronic copy of the options booklet and the flyers for all option courses: please click HERE.
Mr Pilling, Head of Careers at Wyedean has also asked that I refer you to the following guidance regarding Kudos, an online platform for students to use both at home and in school to find out more about possible future careers: Parents and Carers Guide to Careers Education & Guidance
Kudos is an excellent and vast resource but students do need guidance when using it. Please click HERE to access the user guide and advise that you have a quick read before encouraging your child to use it again. When accessing Kudos students sometimes have trouble logging on. They can request their passwords to be reset and have it emailed to their school email. If this is unsuccessful they can create a new account using the licence code gaintime98, they will need to use a different email address for this second account. Once students have shortlisted a selection of careers to explore they need to be really thorough investigating the page for that job. There are many hyperlinks and videos and there is also a very important section showing the labour market information for that career. This shows the national availability of work in this field and the statistics regarding the potential growth or decline in this field. Please have fun exploring together.
